Types of Hearing Aids

  • Behind-the-Ear: Hooks over and sits behind the ear; carries amplified sound to a fitted mold inside the canal; appropriate for any degree of hearing loss, particularly for more severe losses
  • Full Shell: Fills the entire outside portion of the ear; good for those with dexterity issues
  • Half Shell: Sits in the lower outside portion of the ear; good for those with dexterity issues
  • Canal: Custom molded to fit in the canal; less visible
  • Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC): Custom molded to fit more deeply in the canal; least visible; difficult for smaller ears and those with dexterity issues
  • Receiver-in-the-Canal (RIC): Very small behind-the-ear unit with a thin wire coming over the ear and the speaker fit within the ear canal; very discreet; can be fit with a non-custom open ear tip or with a custom mold for more severe losses
